The Giver Quartet

I don`t get the time to read nearly as much as I want to. School is getting harder, and I have less time (and motivation)to read. I`m currently reading about 5 books at once, juggling a bit. (Yay, well done, me)

Anyway, some of what I`ve read so far in 2015 is “the Giver Quartet”. It started kind of random, my friend suggesting a book that i just had to read. So I did. And I absolutely loved it! And then I read the whole quartet. 🙂

THE GIVER (by Lois Lowry)
The giver centers around the 12 year old boy Jonas. He lives in a community where everything is under control. It is a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. Each year they have the annual ceremony, where each age group marks their transition to the next. At 9 you get your bicycle, at 12 you get your life assignment. Jonas doesn`t get one of the normal assignments, he is chosen for something important. He is gogivering to be the next Receiver of Memory. Through the memories that “the giver” shares with him, he begins to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.

This book has become one of the most influential novels of our time, according to Amazon. It was originally written as a childrens book, but it fits all age groups. Schools and stated are banning it, saying it isn`t “fitting for the age group”.

“The Giver graced the ALA’s top 100 list both decades of its existence, ranking eleventh from 1990-1999, while dropping to twenty-third from 2000-2009.”, according to this article:

After reading the first book, in almost one night, I just had to read more. The sequels are:

I liked the first book best, but they were all pretty good. 🙂 These are books that make you think, about your life and how the world works.
